Learning AI from a leading US university used to mean a plane ticket and a big fee. This course needs a laptop and steady internet.

Carnegie Mellon University Africa wants applicants for its Certificate in Artificial Intelligence for Africa. It has six online courses. It is free for those who qualify. Apply between 15 October and 15 November 2026. Classes start on 17 January 2027. Places are few. The university reviews each application before it invites you.

The courses move from the big picture to hands-on skills. Two give context: Artificial Intelligence, Past, Present and Future, and AI and Machine Learning in Africa. Four are technical: Python for AI, Mathematical Foundations of Machine Learning, Machine Learning Essentials and Applied Generative AI. Each has 14 or 15 lessons of about three hours. That is roughly 45 hours a course, or 270 in all.

The aim is AI skills you can use on real African problems. You will need time as well as talent. Plan for at least five to six hours a week.

Students, graduates and working professionals can apply. You should know some linear algebra, probability, statistics and coding. You also need a laptop or desktop and good internet. The listing names no eligible countries, but it is aimed at Africa.

To apply, send your contact details, study and work history, a CV and a short note on your career goals. Take it seriously. Entry depends on your application and the places left.

You earn a digital badge for each course you finish. Complete all six and you get a verifiable certificate to share. The programme does not carry university credit. Read the programme and apply on the CMU-Africa site.

Why it matters: Good AI training is costly and often far from home. A free programme from a leading university gives more Africans a route into the field. They do not have to leave their jobs or cities. It covers maths, Python, machine learning and generative AI, with an African focus.

What to watch next: the 15 November deadline, who is invited to join the next cohort, and whether more places open later.
