Not every opportunity worth an African founder’s time is Africa-specific. These seven programmes are open globally, several have deadlines landing within the next week, and they range from equity-free cash prizes to full accelerator packages with real investment attached. Here’s what’s actually available right now, organized by how soon you need to act.
Deadline: September 1
AI for Good Innovation Factory A global AI startup competition and accelerator run through the ITU’s AI for Good initiative, with startups from multiple regions pitching throughout the programme. Winners can take home up to $20,000 in cash. If you’re building anything AI-related, this is the most time-sensitive opportunity on this list, the deadline is essentially now.
Deadline: September 7
Slush 100 Slush’s flagship startup competition now offers €500,000 completely equity-free, the largest equity-free prize any startup competition has ever awarded. It’s open to seed-stage or earlier startups founded in 2023 or later that have raised less than €10 million. Applying gets you into a multi-stage process, top 100 selected from applications, top 50 from pitch decks, top 20 from video pitches, before the final on Slush’s main stage in Helsinki this November. Even reaching the top 20 puts you in front of thousands of investors and operators who attend Slush specifically to find companies like yours.
Fast Forward Accelerator This one is specifically for tech nonprofits with a working MVP, offering a $25,000 unrestricted grant with no equity or repayment attached. It’s globally accessible, so a nonprofit tech venture based anywhere on the continent can apply. If your startup is structured around social impact rather than pure commercial return, this is worth prioritizing over accelerators built for traditional equity-backed startups.
Deadline: November 18
Techstars Anywhere Accelerator Techstars is currently accepting applications for its next cohort, offering $220,000 in investment as part of a full accelerator programme. What makes this one distinct is right in the name: it’s built for founders building from anywhere, meaning location isn’t the barrier it can be with accelerators that expect relocation to a specific city or hub.
Rolling Applications, No Fixed Deadline
Y Combinator YC accepts applications on a rolling basis even after its stated regular deadlines pass, and founders can apply for future batches at any time. The standard YC funding package is $500,000, and startups from anywhere in the world are eligible to apply. There’s no reason to wait for a specific window to open, if you’re ready, you can submit now.
Antler Antler runs a founder residency model combined with investment ranging from $100,000 to $500,000, with rolling intakes rather than a single annual deadline. This suits founders who don’t yet have a co-founder or a fully formed idea, since Antler’s residency format is built to help you find both.
Founder Institute A pre-seed accelerator with applications currently open. Founder Institute runs one of the more structured pre-seed programmes globally, useful for founders who want a defined curriculum and mentor network rather than a purely self-directed accelerator experience.
Which Ones to Prioritize
If you’re running a standard startup, put your energy behind Slush 100, Techstars, Y Combinator, and Antler first, these four offer the largest checks and the strongest investor networks on this list. If you’re building a social-impact tech organization specifically, add Fast Forward to that shortlist. And if AI is at the core of what you’re building, the AI for Good Innovation Factory deserves a look before its September 1 deadline closes the door on this round entirely.
