A year-long paid fellowship in another African country, with housing and a stipend, is open to young Africans. The deadline is five days away.

Princeton in Africa is taking applications for its Nexus Program. It opens the 2027 to 2028 fellowship to young African graduates. Apply by Monday, 26 October 2026, at 11:59 pm Eastern Daylight Time. Nexus began in 2023 for young leaders who were educated in Africa and live there. Nexus applicants face the same rules as all others.

Here is who can apply. You must be a citizen of an African country and live in Africa. You must hold a bachelor’s, master’s or PhD from an accredited African university, or graduate by June 2027. You must be 35 or younger during the fellowship year, so born on or after 1 September 1992. You need strong English, at level C1 or above. Your passport must stay valid for six months after the fellowship ends. French or Portuguese helps for some posts. You cannot be in graduate study during the fellowship year. Nexus fellows are not placed in their home countries.

The fellowship lasts about 12 months. It starts with an online orientation on 4 to 6 June 2027, which fellows must join live. Placements begin between June and August 2027. Fellows work with host groups across Africa. Packages vary by post. An offer letter gives the details. Placements include housing and a living stipend. Hosts also aim to cover some visas, health and evacuation cover, and a mid-year retreat. Fellows pay a $350 fee on acceptance, plus airfare for some posts.

To apply, use the Princeton GPS portal. You will need your essays, a CV of two pages or less, an official transcript and one recommendation letter. Your university must send the transcript to piafapp@princetoninafrica.org, so ask early. Your referee sends the letter through a form. Late or incomplete files are not reviewed. The team does not confirm receipt of single items, so check your files in the portal. Interview invitations go out in early December. Online interviews run from 6 to 12 January 2027. Send questions by email, not phone.

Read the Nexus Program page and see how to apply.

Why it matters: This fellowship offers a paid year at an African organisation in another country. That can build skills, contacts and a track record across borders. It is open to graduates of African universities who live on the continent.

What to watch next: the 26 October deadline, interview invitations in early December, and which organisations and countries host the 2027 to 2028 fellows.
