Nigeria needs far more people who can keep personal data safe. A new fellowship will train some of them for free. It closes on 31 October.
TechSocietal is taking applications for its Data Protection Leadership Fellowship. It trains Nigerians to advise firms on privacy risk. It focuses on small businesses that cannot afford an experienced Data Protection Officer (DPO). Fellows get a fully paid place on the IIM Certified Data Protection Officer (CDPO) course and exam, plus mentoring. The deadline is 31 October 2026.
The need is big. In April 2026, the Nigeria Data Protection Commission said over 500,000 firms and agencies need DPO services. Only about 10,000 certified DPOs are available. The commission put the gap at about 480,000 people. The count has grown from under 1,000 three years ago, but demand is still far higher.
The fellowship aims to close part of that gap. Fellows also take five modules from TechSocietal. They cover how to handle privacy breaches, protect weak or at-risk users, manage digital risks and make hard choices. Case studies come from Nigeria and the rest of Africa. Mentors are seasoned experts.
Working people and new entrants can apply. The fields are privacy, tech rules, cyber safety and legal compliance. The organisers especially welcome women, young people, recent graduates, lawyers, tech experts and people who help small firms. They look for honesty, a love of learning and a keen interest in doing tech the right way.
The fellowship asks for effort in return. Fellows must attend every session and finish all work. They must sit the CDPO exam and try to pass. Benefits can be pulled if a fellow stops taking part. After the programme, graduates are expected to join TechSocietal’s Data Protection Support Hub. The Hub links certified professionals with small businesses that need low-cost help.
Apply through the online form before the deadline. Fill in the application form or read the call.
Why it matters: Data protection is now a career as well as a legal duty. Small firms that hold customer data often cannot afford a full-time expert. A certified DPO has a skill that employers and small businesses both need. The fellowship also links training to service, which could help firms that cannot pay full rates.
What to watch next: the 31 October deadline, who is picked for the cohort, and how many fellows pass the exam and join the Support Hub.
