Modernizing East Africa’s Pharmaceutical Supply Chain: Dawa Mkononi Secures Strategic Investment from Africa Health Ventures
Tanzanian healthtech startup Dawa Mkononi has secured an investment from Africa Health Ventures to scale its digital medicine distribution platform across Tanzania. Focusing on early-stage health enterprises across the continent, Africa Health Ventures aims to work alongside Dawa Mkononi’s founding team to accelerate market expansion and strengthen pharmaceutical supply chains.
Addressing Fragmented Supply Chains and Medicine Stockouts
Healthcare providers across many African markets face persistent operational hurdles, including fragmented procurement channels, unpredictable delivery timelines, and frequent stockouts. These disruptions directly impair inventory management and limit patient access to essential treatments.
To address these systemic inefficiencies, founders Joseph Paul (MD), Clemence Exaudi, and Asorael Ayo established Dawa Mkononi. The platform establishes a centralized digital network connecting healthcare providers directly with trusted pharmaceutical suppliers, offering a transparent and dependable sourcing framework.

Financial Innovation via the Dawa Kwanza Credit Facility
A major bottleneck for small pharmacies and independent clinics is working capital constraints, which often prevent timely inventory restocking when cash flow is tight. To solve this challenge, Dawa Mkononi launched Dawa Kwanza, a dedicated credit program developed in partnership with Vodacom Tanzania and NCBA Bank Tanzania.
Under the Dawa Kwanza model, eligible healthcare facilities receive immediate access to essential medicine stock and are granted a 28-day window to complete repayment. This mechanism ensures that smaller health facilities can maintain full shelves without suffering operational stoppages due to short-term liquidity deficits.
-
Total Financed Volume: Over Sh1 billion worth of medicine stock financed across Tanzanian pharmacies and clinics.
-
Institutional Partners: Vodacom Tanzania and NCBA Bank Tanzania.
-
Repayment Terms: 28-day revolving credit window for eligible facilities.
-
Core Benefit: Enables continuous inventory flow and mitigates supply interruptions.
Investor Alignment and Strategic Impact
Africa Health Ventures views the modernization of medicine distribution as a high-leverage intervention for improving overall healthcare delivery through a scalable business model. The funding follows a due diligence process conducted by Rowena Luk of Africa Health Ventures.
Reflecting on the investment, Dr. Joseph Paul, MD, CEO and Founder of Dawa Mkononi, highlighted the strategic alignment between both organizations:
“When Rowena Luk visited us in February for due diligence, what inspired us was how much she knew about healthcare in Africa and how much she genuinely cared about improving it. Long before the process was done, we were hoping they’d come on board so we could build this together.”
Scaling Infrastructure for Broader Healthcare Delivery
While the exact investment amount remains undisclosed, the new capital infusion will be deployed to expand Dawa Mkononi’s digital reach, optimize data analytics capabilities, and broaden its footprint across Tanzania. By combining digital order consolidation, working capital credit, and optimized supplier links, Dawa Mkononi and Africa Health Ventures seek to build a resilient distribution network that reduces friction from pharmaceutical logistics across East Africa.
