Small community groups often do vital work with little money, few staff and weak systems. MAMA HOPE wants to help fix that. The non-profit has opened applications for the 2027 Localization Development Accelerator (LDA), a free nine-month programme for locally-led organisations in East Africa. The deadline is November 15, 2026, at 11:59 PM East Africa Time, and the organisation says late applications will not be considered. You can apply through this MAMA HOPE link. It is a shortened link that we could not open, so confirm that it leads to MAMA HOPE’s own application page before you enter any details.
Who can apply? MAMA HOPE says the programme is for locally-led organisations based in Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda or Rwanda. They need annual operating budgets below US$100,000, strong relationships with the communities they serve, and the ability to give 2 to 4 hours a week for nine months. Earlier listings add that the group should be founded and led by community members and may work in any field, from health and education to climate, disability inclusion and women and girls. MAMA HOPE describes participation as free for organisations that qualify.
The timeline is clear. Applications are reviewed in November and December 2026, and that review ends by December 31. Shortlisted groups are contacted by email in January 2027 and invited to interviews. Selected organisations are told in February 2027 and receive onboarding details. Groups that do not qualify will get an email, but MAMA HOPE warns that it may not be able to give individual feedback because of the volume of applications. The announcement does not give a start date for the 2027 cohort, so plan around February onward.
What do participants get? MAMA HOPE has not published the full 2027 package in what we could read. Its February 2025 write-up of the earlier programme gives a guide. It describes weekly group sessions, one-to-one coaching and webinars. The training covered theory of change and strategic planning, finance and operations, monitoring and evaluation, branding and communications, and fundraising. It also listed micro-grants to apply the learning and fiscal sponsorship through MAMA HOPE’s US-registered charity. Other support included a donation platform, funder introductions and partner visits. Treat this as a likely outline, not a promise for 2027. The announcement itself mentions practical learning, mentorship, peer exchange and systems development.
Be ready for competition. For the 2025 cohort, MAMA HOPE reported 905 applications. Of those, 186 passed the first round and 35 had interviews. Cohorts have 10 to 12 organisations. By our rough arithmetic, that means about one in 75 to one in 90 applicants gets a place. We do not know how many applied for 2027. Those numbers come from MAMA HOPE and relate to a past round.
The programme exists because small groups are often left out of funding. MAMA HOPE has cited 2021 data showing that less than 1.2% of global humanitarian funding goes to grassroots organisations. It also says small groups face three barriers. They often lack capacity. They rely on networks to reach funders. And restricted funding can pull them away from their own priorities. The accelerator is its response, built after a 2022 review of its model.
If you plan to apply, start now. Check that you meet each requirement, especially the budget limit and the weekly time. Write about your community ties and your biggest gaps in systems, such as finance records, planning or reporting. Be honest about your capacity, since the programme runs for nine months. If you know a group that fits, share the opportunity. This post is not an official MAMA HOPE notice.
