Are you a researcher who wants to study how African universities really work? A new call offers money, 15 months of support and a team option. The deadline is 16 January 2027.
CODESRIA is taking proposals for research grants on university ecosystems in Africa. Each grant is worth between $5,000 and $15,000. Projects get 15 months of research support. A project can have one researcher, or a team of three to five, so you can apply alone or together. Applications close on 16 January 2027. The announcement is in English and French.
The call looks at higher education, gender, academic freedom and quality associational life in African universities. It has two themes. The first is gender and associational life. The second is academic freedom. Applicants should pick the theme that fits their idea.
The flyer names the Andrew Carnegie Foundation as the backer.
To apply, use the online portal at apply.codesria.org. Send questions to tgf@codesria.org. Read the full call first, as it will set out who can apply and what to include. Start early, since a strong proposal needs a clear question, a method and a plan.
Why it matters: Universities train many of Africa’s future leaders. Who gets a voice on campus? How free are scholars to teach and research? A grant gives researchers the means to answer such questions with local evidence. It can also give a researcher a funded project for their record.
