When commercial venture capital pulled back across emerging markets, it exposed a stark structural reality: startups building essential infrastructure for the “real economy”—from farm-gate mechanization to B2B financial tools—were often left undercapitalized by conventional equity funds.

Village Capital is executing a deliberate alternative.

Through its Africa Ecosystem Catalysts Facility (AECF), the global impact investor has committed a combined $500,000 to three Ghanaian startups: SME management platform Built Financial Technologies, agri-trading engine GrowForMe, and industrial hardware manufacturer SAYeTECH.

The funding completes AECF’s initial Ghana deployment, bringing its total country exposure to $850,000 across five startups, following an earlier $350,000 allocation to healthcare operator Rivia Clinics and logistics firm VDL Fulfilment.

The Investee Breakdown: Solving Systemic Bottlenecks

Rather than chasing light consumer software, Village Capital’s latest portfolio additions address deep structural friction across West Africa’s primary economic engines.

Built Financial Technologies

  • Core Product: All-in-one SME accounting, payroll, invoicing, and embedded finance platform.

  • Traction: 10-year operating history; 18,000+ SMEs onboarded across Ghana, Kenya, and Nigeria; $1.5+ billion in processed invoices.

  • Capital Purpose: Platform-wide AI integrations and go-to-market acceleration.

“What stood out was how VilCap structured the funding around the realities of our business and growth trajectory, rather than taking a one-size-fits-all approach. That flexibility gives us the support we need to scale sustainably, invest in AI across our platform, and strengthen our go-to-market efforts.”

Edward Neequaye, CEO and Co-Founder, Built Financial Technologies

GrowForMe

  • Core Product: Agri-commodity trading, input financing, warehousing, and aggregation platform connecting smallholders directly to off-takers and institutional trade flows.

  • Traction: 19,000+ farmers impacted; $3.9+ million in commodity trades facilitated.

  • Ecosystem Backing: Previously backed by Google’s Black Founders Fund, develoPPP Ventures, and the UN Capital Development Fund (UNCDF).

SAYeTECH

  • Core Product: Localized smart agricultural machinery, including high-capacity threshers and grain-cleaning equipment.

  • Traction: Winner of the 2024 MEST Africa Challenge; equipment processes crops up to 40 times faster than manual methods, reducing multi-day harvesting tasks to hours.

  • Capital Purpose: Market entry preparation, ECOWAS distribution network expansion, and partnership structuring.

“Most traditional financing options available locally are not designed for businesses like ours that are building industrial solutions for agriculture. This investment gives us the patient, well-structured support we need to prepare for market entry, strengthen partnerships and distribution, and position the company for sustainable expansion within the ECOWAS region.”

Theodore Ohene-Botchway, Co-Founder and CTO, SAYeTECH

The AECF Model: Decoupling Sourcing from Foreign Bias

Managed by Village Capital and anchored by FMO (the Dutch Entrepreneurial Development Bank) and the Netherlands Enterprise Agency (RVO), the $4 million AECF pilot represents a significant evolution in early-stage blended finance.

Rather than running investment screening exclusively from offshore hubs, AECF delegates deal sourcing and due diligence to in-market Entrepreneur Support Organisations (ESOs). In Ghana, Village Capital partnered with Reach for Change and Innovation Spark to identify founders building context-rich solutions tailored to on-the-ground realities.

“These startups are building practical, locally grounded solutions to challenges that affect how small businesses and farmers operate every day. What’s notable is that they’re not waiting for the infrastructure to catch up; they’re building it themselves. Getting the right capital behind them is how those solutions scale.”

Husein Merchant, Investment Officer at Village Capital

Strategic Ecosystem Implications

Hardware and Physical Infrastructure Are Gaining Investor Traction

Software alone cannot resolve West Africa’s agricultural deficit. Backing hardware makers like SAYeTECH indicates an appetite for localized manufacturing that directly expands yield capacity and reduces post-harvest loss.

Capital Structuring Must Match Unit Realities

Unlike rigid equity cycles that push early startups toward unsustainable burn, AECF utilizes tailored, flexible financing options—giving growth-stage ventures room to stabilize unit economics before pursuing institutional Series A capital.

Next Expansion Targets: Nigeria and Tanzania

With its Ghana portfolio allocation now closed across healthcare, logistics, FinTech, AgTech, and hardware manufacturing, AECF will turn its focus toward deploying capital across Nigeria and Tanzania, collaborating with local ESOs to back early-stage founders driving economic mobility and climate resilience.
