Gabon’s Ministry of Digital Economy, Digitalization and Innovation has officially launched Kimba Connect, a national open innovation platform designed to bridge the gap between established corporations and local technology entrepreneurs.

Targeting an initial cohort of 150 to 200 startups, the platform provides a structured mechanism for enterprises to post operational and commercial bottlenecks—allowing local tech innovators to pitch, build, and deploy market-ready solutions directly into corporate supply chains.

Strategic Anchors: Financing and Technical Capacity

Recognizing that open innovation platforms fail without capital and technical depth, the Gabonese government simultaneously locked in two cornerstone agreements during the launch event:

Strategic Pillar Partner Objective & Operational Role
Credit & Risk Guarantees Société Gabonaise de Garantie (SGG) Provides public credit guarantees to lower risk profiles, helping early-stage startups secure commercial bank loans.
Technical Capacity Building Huawei Technologies Gabon Delivers specialized technical training in high-demand domains: Artificial Intelligence, Cybersecurity, Cloud/Networking, and Software Engineering.

How the Open Innovation Engine Works

Rather than relying on isolated hackathons or academic incubators, Kimba Connect embeds startups directly into the real-world economy:

  1. Problem Definition: Large enterprises post specific operational, logistical, or software challenges on the platform.

  2. Startup Matching: Registered Gabonese entrepreneurs pitch customized technological solutions tailored to those exact requirements.

  3. Integration & Scaling: Selected startups integrate their software or hardware services into corporate supply chains, backed by bank guarantees from SGG and technical oversight from Huawei.

“Innovation must respond to practical needs and create lasting connections among businesses, startups, and skilled professionals.”

Mark-Alexandre Doumba, Minister of Digital Economy, Digitalization and Innovation

Why This Matters for Central Africa’s Tech Ecosystem

Traditionally, corporate procurement in Central Africa has leaned heavily on foreign software vendors and multinational IT service providers. By creating a formalized state-backed bridge, Kimba Connect aims to:

  • Retain Tech Capital Domestically: Keep corporate IT spending within the local tech ecosystem.

  • De-Risk Entrepreneurship: Provide young startups with institutional validation, bankability, and predictable corporate revenue pipelines.

  • Accelerate National Digital Sovereignty: Reduce dependence on imported software by cultivating local talent capable of building enterprise-grade applications.
