A South African school group has been using MathU’s maths tools in its classrooms since 2023. Now it owns a quarter of the company and holds the keys to its AI.

Advtech, a Johannesburg-listed private education group, has bought a 25% stake in MathU, a Pretoria-based EdTech company. The deal gives Advtech a seat on MathU’s board and exclusive access to its current and future AI-enhanced learning tools in all markets. The price was not disclosed. The deal was announced on 21 October 2026.

The two firms already know each other well. MathU’s platform was rolled out across Advtech’s Schools Division in 2023 under the Advlearn brand. It gives learners personalised practice in Mathematics and Physical Science, and an English module is set to launch soon. MathU also serves accounting, and offers its tools to workplaces and communities.

MathU channel Who it serves
MathU Academy. Schools.
MathU Corporate. Workplace teams.
MathU Society. Underserved communities.

Advtech runs schools, colleges and staffing firms across southern Africa, Kenya and Ethiopia. It is betting that AI-led, personal learning will lift results at scale. Group CEO Geoff Whyte said the deal joins education know-how with new tech. He said it will help widen access to quality education across Africa.

For MathU, the deal brings reach. Founder and CEO WA Burger said working with Advtech will speed up the spread of his technology and bring new learning tools to more students. A founder alone would find that hard to do.

The timing is strong for Advtech. In the six months to June 2026, the group reported earnings growth of 16% and enrolments up 13%. It says it sees room for more growth from exclusive access to MathU’s AI tools.

Why it matters: African EdTech has struggled to turn good products into steady revenue. Here, a startup gets a large buyer that already uses its tools, plus the cash and distribution to grow. For Advtech, a minority stake secures an edge in AI learning without buying the whole company. The exclusivity also matters. It may keep rival school groups from using MathU’s newest AI tools. That could limit how far the tools spread beyond Advtech. For EdTech founders, the lesson is to land a real customer first. Then let the tie grow into an investment.

What to watch next: the English module launch, and whether MathU Society brings maths and science help to more underserved learners. Also watch for the deal price, how exclusivity affects other schools, and whether other education groups back African EdTech firms.
