UpSkill Universe has launched AI Skills For Business, a new programme designed to take 55,000 small businesses across Nigeria and South Africa from their first contact with artificial intelligence to verified, measurable business impact. The initiative is powered by HP and delivered by UpSkill Universe, and registration is open now through two courses on the HP LIFE platform, one aimed at business professionals already using digital tools and one built for complete beginners.
How Small Business Owners Can Join
Entrepreneurs can register directly for either of two tracks depending on where they’re starting from. AI for Business Professionals is built for owners and teams with some existing digital fluency who want to apply AI more deliberately to their operations, while AI for Beginners is designed for entrepreneurs who haven’t engaged with AI tools at all yet. Both run through life-global.org, the platform behind HP LIFE, the HP Foundation’s free global business skills training service.
Building on a Real Track Record
This isn’t UpSkill Universe’s first attempt at this kind of large-scale SME training push. In July 2025, the organisation launched a similarly structured programme called Skills for Business, backed jointly by HP and Google, aiming to directly train 10,000 SMEs across Nigeria and South Africa with an additional 59,000 people reached indirectly. That programme ran on the same HP LIFE infrastructure, offering more than 30 practical modules across eight languages covering AI productivity, digital marketing, and e-commerce, delivered alongside live virtual workshops. UpSkill Universe CEO Gori Yahaya framed that earlier effort around a straightforward premise: African entrepreneurs are already driving change in their communities, and the barrier standing between them and faster growth is usually access to practical tools and the confidence to use them, not ambition. HP’s Global Head of Social Impact, Michele Malejki, tied that work to a bigger corporate commitment, HP’s stated goal of accelerating digital equity for 150 million people worldwide by 2030.
What’s Different About This Round
AI Skills For Business represents a real jump from that starting point, both in scale and in focus. Where the 2025 programme spread its curriculum across AI, digital marketing, and e-commerce broadly and targeted 10,000 businesses, this new initiative narrows in specifically on AI adoption and aims more than five times higher, at 55,000 small businesses. The framing has sharpened too. Rather than positioning AI as one module among several, UpSkill Universe is describing this programme as a deliberate path from a business owner’s very first exposure to AI tools through to demonstrated, verified impact on how that business actually runs, a more ambitious and more specific outcome than general digital skills training typically promises.
Why This Matters for Africa’s SME Economy
Small and medium-sized businesses account for the overwhelming majority of jobs across Africa, and they’re also the segment least likely to have the time, budget, or in-house expertise to experiment with new technology on their own. A free, structured, multi-language on-ramp into practical AI use, backed by a global hardware and software company with real distribution reach, addresses a gap that’s easy to identify and historically hard to close at meaningful scale. UpSkill Universe, founded in 2015 and now operating in more than 34 countries, has built its broader reputation specifically around this kind of large-scale, partner-backed skills delivery, which gives this new programme a credible operational foundation even before results start coming in.
What to Watch
The real measure of AI Skills For Business won’t be registration numbers, it will be whether “verified business impact,” the specific outcome UpSkill Universe is promising, actually shows up in participating businesses months from now. Programmes at this scale tend to be judged generously at launch and much more critically at their first progress report, and a jump from 10,000 to 55,000 participants is a significant operational stretch for any training provider to execute well. For now, the two application links are open, and any small business owner in Nigeria or South Africa looking to move past AI curiosity and into actual use has a genuine, no-cost way to start.
